Discover the region

Located in the Neckar Valley between Horb, "the gateway to the Black Forest," and the episcopal see of Rottenburg, the four surrounding regions offer a wealth of opportunities. To the southwest lies the Black Forest with its peaks and valleys, enticing visitors with its natural beauty and cultural heritage; the royal city of Freudenstadt is a popular destination. To the northwest are the Heckengäu region and the Neckar Valley, home to several important cultural sites and the Stuttgart metropolitan region. Nearby are the university town of Tübingen and the historic towns of Herrenberg, Nagold, and Rottenburg. To the east, the Neckar Valley borders the "Swabian Tuscany" region, extending to the edge of the Swabian Alps. Here, too, one finds important regional cultural sites, such as the historic old town with its castle in Haigerloch, beneath which, carved into the rock, lies the atomic cellar that heralded the atomic age. The region is dominated by Hohenzollern Castle, the birthplace of the Prussian imperial dynasty, perched atop a conical hill at the foot of the Swabian Alps.

In the south, on the way towards Lake Constance and Switzerland, lies Rottweil, the oldest city in Baden-Württemberg, with its historic old town, and the twin city of Villingen-Schwenningen.

"Between 1668 and 1675, Georg Christoph von Schönfeld built a prestigious residence at the crossroads to Bildechingen. The current castle was built by Christian Freiherr von Münch by 1809 to replace the building that burned down on July 14, 1807. Since then, the castle has served a variety of purposes and was most recently renovated by the Schütt family between 2015 and 2020. Today, the castle houses apartments."

FAQ

  • Are there parking spaces?

Yes, each apartment has a standard parking space in the courtyard. There are also two additional public parking spaces directly opposite the entrance. In the courtyard garden, directly below the intersection, there are further public parking spaces of any size.

  • How far away is the Neckar River?

The Neckar River is only a 3-minute walk away; at the Mühlen weir there is the possibility for canoeists to start or arrive.

  • Are there washing facilities?

Each apartment has a washing machine and dryer or a combination machine.

  • Check-in and check-out times?

Check-in is normally possible from 5:00 PM, and check-out is until 12:00 PM. We are happy to answer requests for other times and will try to accommodate them if possible.

  • Is Mühlen Castle family-friendly?

Yes, we are family-friendly and children are welcome. There is a playhouse with a sandbox in the yard. If you require a cot, please let us know in advance.

  • Are there any restaurants nearby?

A 2-minute walk away is the Gasthof Adler, a traditional Swabian inn with a bowling alley, which has been serving Swabian cuisine since 1831. Horb, with its various restaurants, is a 4-minute drive away. Also highly recommended is a visit to what is probably Germany's most beautiful beer garden, where you can enjoy the view over Horb and the Neckar Valley. It's a 45-minute walk or an 8-minute drive. For those who find the climb from the Neckar Valley too strenuous, we recommend the Mühlen/Rauschbart hiking parking lot; from there it's a 20-minute walk with no major inclines.
